mike,
regardless of the timeliness, or timelessness of some of these tunes, Eve
of Destruction continues to be a meaningful song to many... it is requested
several times each week while i'm on the overnights here at WROR... and not
by the same person, or even persons. it varies week to week. it's just a
song that might have popped up as a production-aid on a news channel piece,
or on a movie they rented at the store.
plus, as an added bonus, you do need to admire the lyrical nature of the
song...
how many other tunes not only use the word "coagulatin'", but get it to
rhyme, too?
(i often wonder if that line wasn't a bar-bet challenge...)
as to the other issue of playlist size addressed here recently...
i know before i actually got into radio that i owned more than 200 songs.
as we watch each year go by, there's always a focus on the "top 100 songs of
the year". do we need to play all the novelty songs in a regular rotation?
no. but isn't it a guilty pleasure to pop on the radio and hear an "Oh Wow!"
kind of tune? sure, by unanimous decree, there are at least a dozen songs
that should have been given the Steve Dahl treatment... among them, "You
Light Up My Life", "Feelings", "The Last Farewell"... unfortunately, the
masters to these have not yet been destroyed.
working on a station with a "tight" list is tough, as many of you well
know. and you also know that when a fresh batch of tunes makes it way into
the studio, it's a little like christmas... i've tried to be a "good boy"
for Harry, and keep hoping that i'll wake up and find "Sauvecito" by Malo in
my stocking.... (considering Jimmy Ray is currently using the backing vocals
on his track...) my personal taste leaves me seeing no problem with a two
thousand title list... imagine going a week without hearing "Brandy" by the
Looking Glass twice??!!
thanks for allowing me the input!
