I'd guess that it has more to do with the fact that audiences today have
the attention span of a canary.  "Traditional" oldies formats have fairly
short playlists, too yet they seem to stay around.  Could it be that as we
niche things tighter and tighter, there just aren't enough legitimate hits
in any of these increasingly narrow genres to sustain interest once the
novelty wears off?
