"The Robins Report" in last week's TV GUIDE discusses the fact that there
seems to be a significant decline in audience this season for broadcast
television. This includes a number of prime time hits, such as ER and the
X-Files, daytime stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Rosie O'Donnell, and Regis
and Kathie Lee. Syndicated hits such as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Xena:
Warrior Princess, and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys are all down 25% or
more in viewership. At this point, no one seems to know why this seems to
be happening. Some are blaming the Neilsens, while others suggest the
audience is being lost to cable and the Internet. A recent study
commissioned by AOL shows 43% of respondents saying that they were watching
less TV since going online.
This is causing still moe concern because the people being lost most seem
to be the 18-34 age group.
Maybe some day stations will start trying to appeal to the older
demographic just because they'll be the only ones listining! ;->
