In the past few weeks, I've read dozens of
comments about the format change at WQEW.
I am truly stunned how many people who are
age 20 to early 50's who seem to love this
station. This is not the typical core audience
of most standards stations. I.E.: Cleveland's
very successful MOYL: WRMR/850kHz. is
over 90% age 65+...and has been for about
5 or 6 years (as their core has aged).
Don't get me wrong...it's sad that some
600,000 greater New Yorker's will lose
the station they use weekly...it's a shame.
My shock is how many people on this NG,
some of whom I know are in their late 20's to
early 50's....seem really sad about this
happening.
I just turned age 50. My idea of mellow/or classic
music of MY era is 60's/70's soft rock. Oh sure,
there's probably 20-25% of a typical MOYL/standards
station's music that's OK to me...and there's
great music from every era...for sure.
But......from everything I've ever read or seen...standards
is an age 60 to 65+ format.
Not being critical at all of those people who seem
really upset this format is leaving WQEW...I'm
just surprised HOW MANY of these folks are on
this NG, and their ages!
Happy New Year to all!
Tim
