"WBZ-FM 106.7FM"
I used to listen to Group W's WBZ-FM in Boston when it was just an
automated IBM cardreader commercial free rock station and I think I
was the only person who liked it! It always had music when WVBF 105.7
had ads. It was mounted aside the Westinghouse WBZ-TV 4 Tower in
Needham MA and for 10 years it seemed to be a tax write-off never playing
any commercials at all (except when simulcasting the AM) and was not even
acknowledged in the industry, yet there it was, with a huge signal bombing
in through out New England. Back when WCOZ 94 1/2 "Kick Ass Rock" was
on, I believe it was the first time an FM beat WBZ AM ! ever! If I remember
correctly, The Group W people decided to polish up the FM (Which means
stopping the 2 songs playing at once phenomenon and putting the stereo back
in phase) and promote the station as "The most music anywhere" with 4
songs; a Dave Maynard station ID; 4 more songs; a PSA; 4 more songs' etc.
until finally an instrumental reel to reel tape would kick in to segue into
the
AM newscast. "BZ-FM" actually cut into WCOZ's audience enough to drop
their ratings down so WBZ AM could be back on top! At least that's what
seemed to be happening from my perspective anyway. It eventually sold for
4 million or something ridiculous like that and the station has since been a
cash machine as WMJX 106.7FM.
Why the hell didn't Westinghouse ever know what to do with an FM
station to save their lives? They were the premier original type broadcaster
of
all time and they seemed to rest in their laurels all the time. I mean college
stations in Boston would have killed for a big signal like that (So would I)
to
play with and WBZ staffers working at the AM and especially at the TV side
did not even know there was a WBZ-FM! I remember Channel 4 was looking
for WCRB to simulcast a TV show and they did not want to so they reluctantly
used BZ-FM, and the caption on TV gave the wrong frequency!
I think that is really weird!!! Anyone else remember the strangeness of this
station? It was like a utility style rock station! I am the only one that
thought it
sounded really cool when they were not playing two songs at once or the
master control guy forgot to "Push the button" after the AM news was finished
to restart "Bozo" the chugging antique automation! This station had a sound
that has never been even remotely duplicated since anywhere!!
Hummm?
Happy Holidays
Kyle.
