1320 am in Derry, NH has a CP to go to 10KW days. And deep inside that area
of my brain not yet debilitated by dissolute living, I recall that at least
a decade ago, before 5 KW-limited stations were allowed higher powers, WPLM
1390 am in Plymouth, Mass requested a rulemaking to let them go to 10 KW
days. They probably argued that since a good portion of their signal went
out to sea anyway, what difference would a transmitter doubling make? It
seems to me that the Boston market would be ideal for all the 5 KW stations
(590,950,1150,1260,1330,1430 and 1600) to build antenna systems aimed out to
sea, but so far it hasn't happened. As Inspector Clouseau once said: "All
yew haff to dew is app-ply".

And find the land! Big, big, B-I-G deal. Land for new AM directionals just
doesn't exist in these parts! If the stations could afford the land, the
environmental protesters would make sure that no new towers would ever be built.

As for 1150, it's no go because of the long-gone 1150 in St Johns NS. The US
is still "notified" of that assignment, as it is of all AM assignments that
Canada ever used. This means that the assignments must be protected just as
if the old stations still existed. Canada NEVER de-notifies the US of ANY
deleted AM assignments.

And 1260 is totally "land locked." WPZE can't increase its signal in any
direction except straight out to sea. How much sense does that make from a
location that's less than a mile from the coast? And if you go east from
Boston, you still have to worry about Canada.
