But if I correctly read one of the posts on this topic, even if the second
and fourth towers in the above example qualify for remaining unlit because
their proximity to the illuminated towers on either side, if the second and
fourth towers are painted orange and white, they still must be illuminated
with blinking red lights. For several years, one of the four towers at the
WNFT site in Lexington was unlit. This was the farthest northwest tower in
the three-tower in-line AM array. Keeping this tower unlit seemed legit to
me because. not far away, though not in-line, is the taller FM tower, which
is lit. (The tall tower was once 100.7.) But coincident with the
announcement of WNFT's sale to Mega, WNFT began illuminating all of the
towers. All four towers are painted orange and white, so I wonder if the FAA
noticed the paint and told the station that it had to illuminate all towers
to comply with the regulations. And yes, I know that Mega bought WNFT but
not the WNFT site; the site is still owned by Steve Dodge's American Tower
Systems.
