Ah yes, a technique that has been used in radio plays
and comedy albums (at least the ones in stereo).
For example, a Monty Python comedy album would have this:
LEFT CHANNEL: What've you got?
RIGHT CHANNEL: Well,there's egg and spam, egg 
sausage and spam , bacon and spam...
LEFT CHANNEL: Do you have anything without spam?

And so on...listening on headphones was kind of neat.
And the on-air board that my station USED TO have
had dials on the two microphones so that you could
"pan them", and have one person in one speaker and
one in the other.
