WPTR's night signal towards New England was legendary, but at night in
downtown Albany it (was) horrible.  They were always fighting it out with
... well, whatever the heck that other station was at 1540.

Legendary bad signals (not 50k's?)  My vote would be WKZE, Orleans MA. 
1000 watts aimed directly at Spain, therefore covering Nauset Beach quite
well, but that was about it.
