Re: Tight Play Lists

A couple listening suggestions for those bemoaning the absence of many
hits of the past from today's oldies programming...

"Rock'n'Roll America" (WBUR-FM and its associated stations, Sunday,
11-midnight) comes from Indiana Public Radio. Richard Aquila generally
plans his show around a theme and plays hits and almost-hits that tie
in. There are usually a couple brief interview segments. One recent
show focused on songs inspired by the Cold War and included seldom-heard
artifacts like Toni Fisher's "West of the Wall" and Johnny Burnette's
"God, Country, and My Baby."

For those in and around Maine, check out "Those Oldies But Goodies"
(Maine Public Radio, Monday, 11-midnight), a local production with Toby
LeBoutillier. There is a strict rotation on this show: every hit gets
played once every 5 years regardless of whether it spent 10 weeks at #1
or peaked at #99 on the Hot 100. A few songs get dropped because of
time considerations and, last time I checked, LeBoutillier was missing 8
of the records that made the Hot 100 between 1955 and 1972, but it's a
fairly thorough walk through pop music history, especially if you also
check out "Down Memory Lane" (Friday 2-4 p.m.) where LeBoutillier treats
the hits of the '20s through '50s in similar fashion.
