While most of us "OD "on radio....the average listener does not.
And while most of us would love a station that has a large active
library....and would see it as a station with "variety"....it doesn't
have the same result on audience listening patterns.
i.e.
Station A has 400 songs in active rotation
Station B has 275.
(With the understanding that Station B has *eliminated* the 125 worst
songs from Station A's playlist....Station B will prosper.)
While Station A is playing one of those 125 songs from the bottom of the
playlist.... Station B will ALWAYS be playing a *better* song.....
The question now comes...who's research is better? Who decides which
songs are at the bottom of the list? And....How low can you go/how much
can you cut/how tight can you get....and still have a listenable station
?
Kiss and Jammin probably have the tightest rotation....probably about 2-
1/4 hours for their hottest newest most popular songs....and they are
doing pretty well.
Says more about the audience...that most don't listen for a coupla hours
at a time...and if they do...they probably don't mind hearing their
favorite songs a coupla times.....
Just my $.02
