Even before F-105, it was FM-105, WKOX.......

Subject: "frequency shorthand"

There was mention today on LTAR about how some AM
stations started to use their full kHz frequencies
when identifying themselves on-air; for example,
WRKO used to call themselves "68-RKO", but when radios
with digital tuning really came into use, they'd say
"AM 680" or something. (Of course, I don't believe
station frequencies are part of a legal ID; I'm
just talking about how they tell their listeners
of where they are on the dial.)

Remember when just about every FM station would
"round off" their frequency(another sort of frequency
shorthand)...for example, you'd hear of "FM 94, WCGY"
(really at 93.7) or "93,WBOS" (really,92.9). At least
one station still "rounds off"--you never hear WXKS
call itself "Kiss 107.9"...
I do remember one station "rounding off" in the
wrong direction. When they were a top 40 station,
the old WVBF (105.7) would call themselves "F-105"
(though technically they're closer to 106...maybe
they mean "105, short for 105.7").

Trivial, yes, but any comments?
