Did you see the listing of the cumes of the five most listened to AM music
stations in the US? M-Street Journal published it in the latest issue.

KLAC 684,000
WQEW 597,000
<this is from memory, so I don't remember the exact numbers or all of the
stations>
WPEN ???,???
KABL 294,000
<OTOH, four out of five ain't bad; Alzheimers hasn't kicked in yet.>

All of the ones that I listed do adult standards. The fifth one (I haven't a
clue without M-Street in hand) programs oldies. I wonder what the
corresponding numbers are for KIXI. There's station with good facilities
(880 kHz 50 kW-D/10 kW-N DA-2) in a large market (Seattle). Also, from my
last trip to Seattle (1993), KIXI was doing the format about as well as it
can be done.

I wonder whether, if you take out KLAC's numbers for Imus, KLAC's cume falls
enought to leave it behind WQEW. That would mean that WQEW wouldn't have to
stop using the liner "More people listen to American Popular Standards on
WQEW than on any other radio station." Also, if you go by population in the
SMSA or ADI, how do the English-speaking populations of LA and New York
compare? As far as I know, the total population within the LA city limits
isn't 70% of the population of New York City. And the number of radio
signals in the LA market is certainly at least equal to the number in the
New York market. So KLAC's numbers relative to WQEW's are impressive on the
surface. But the numbers may be more nearly equal, or maybe lower than
WQEW's, if you correct for the AM drive hours when KLAC does talk (Imus).
