I have been interested in reading the thread on Buckley and the standards
format. When Buckley owned 970 WYNZ (now WZAN) they dumped the standards
format in favor of simulcasting the oldies format of WYNZ-FM. At the time the
format was changed, WYNZ was in the top 5 or 6 in the 12+ demo of the Portland
memo. The reasons given at the time was the station (that was live 24/7 with
a news staff) was not making money despite the good numbers because high staff
costs and a lack of advertiser interest in the older demos. It's interesting
to see that they have made such a commitment to and had such success with the
format in Connecticut.
About a year later, Buckle sold both stations to Saga.
