Actually, it began regular color broadcasting in 1955.  The first regular
color show, from September or October 1955 has been sold here and there on
home video, in black and white.  Most of the kinescopes survive, and
Buffalo Bob was trying to buy back the rights from NBC, in order to
colorize them and package them for cable TV.  NBC wasn't interested.

In fact, the first network color show ever was the Howdy Doody show of 26
June 1953, according to the show's producer, Roger Muir.
