I recall that some years ago, when Schulke's beautiful music format was
highly-popular on many FM stations, even though they didn't carry newscasts,
right on the nose at the top of each hour, the music would fade out, and a
canned ID would be aired.
I asked, and discovered that near the top of each hour, the automation would
be sure to play from one of its non-vocal reels only, and that
electronically, it would begin to do a fade-out abot 5 secs before each
hour. But I also recall the days of WHDH-FM, which woud fade out vocals as
well.
It's a simple process, requiring a bit of engineering.
