WEEI/Newsradio 590

Dear Mr. Casey:
When WEEI/590 switched to all-news in the spring of 1974, it was
a major success in many aspects. The only reason why CBS dumped
WEEI/590 was that they wanted to only own 50,000 watt Clear Channel
stations like KNX/Los Angeles, WCBS/New York, WBBM/Chicago and so on.
WEEI was only 5,000 watts on 590. But the signal covered Boston like
a glove. The CBS Radio Mystery Theatre you mentioned was already in
place on WEEI, BEFORE the day they switched to all-news in 1974. It
was a fine sounding station, comparable to WCBS/Newsradio 88. When
WEEI was sold to the pizza magnate, only THEN did it fail miserably.
WEEI/590 (CBS in Boston) was, IMHO, one of the finest news
operations in Boston, bar none. Nobody, even WBZ could top that !

Sincerely,

Peter Q. George
