Subject: The Uncle Mel-ization of 1010-WINS.
As many in this newsgroup know, New York's WINS (1010) has pretty success-
fully been able to hide from it's listeners the fact that it is a CBS-
owned station.
Even after the CBS/Westinghouse merger, the station, in it's ID, had a
tag "Group W/Westinghouse Broadcasting", making it perhaps the last
former Group W outlet to use that phrase.
Since then, they've not identified ownership on the air.
But....................
..............the other night, there was a promotional spot on 1010-WINSA
voiced by one Dan Rather and using the same music CBS uses as background
in it's promos for the "CBS Evening News" that Rather anchors. In the
spot, Rather urges listeners to tune-in and "lock on to" 1010-WINS, then
urges them, when they get home, to watch "(W)CBS-(TV)2" (New York) at
6:30 P.M. weeknights for his newscast.
I think Rather also did a cross-promotion in which he mentioned WINS'
"Traffic and Transit On The 1's" as well as his television newscast.
The Uncle Mel-ization of 1010-WINS has begun!!
