It was the new owners, Mariner Communications, who applied for the power
boost and put up the new tower. Some of you may recall how badly Mariner
screwed things up. I was ultimately called in to help with the endless bad
p.r. the new transmitter had engendered-- r.f.i. everywhere. People were
getting the station on their electric blankets, their telephones, their
vibrators... I block on the guy who ran the place (Joe somebody-- it will
come back to me), but the chief engineer, Grady Moates, and I spent way too
much time handling all of the complaints... Why Mariner wanted the station
to be WITS (which we all said stood for What Is This Shit) is anybody's
guess-- weather, information, talk, sports was the plan, getting the Red Sox
and other teams was supposed to also be in the cards. All I remember about
that time in late 1980/early 1981 was that the station's plans fell through,
checks began to bounce, and the wonderful new xmitter didn't solve the
problems it was supposed to solve-- it just created new ones...
