Popular Maine televison reporter dies

Longtime Maine TV reporter/personality Bob Elliot died of a
heart attack during a cycling excursion yesterday morning near his
Cape Elizabeth home. He was 47.

Elliot's lighthearted, wildly popular human interest features had
run on Portland stations since 1987, when he returned to his home
state after years spent with NBC-TV covering events in the
southwestern US, Mexico and Central America. His death leaves a
substantial void at WMTW-TV, which hired Elliot last December and had
promoted his presence heavily in hopes of making headway against
market leading WCSH-TV and WGME-TV.

This obit has a Boston radio interest angle: Elliot's first
commercial broadcast gig was at WCAS in Cambridge as a
reporter from 1973-75. He subsequently worked at WCVB-TV as a sports
producer from 1975-78.

Certain information in this obituary was obtained from the Press
Herald Online.
