I was an MIT grad student, living in what is now (I think) called Ashdown
House at the corner of Mass Ave and Mem Drive from 1956 to 1958. I think you
have it exactly right. The buildings were definitely not in the same
location (a few hundred feet apart, I'd say), but could easily have the same
address.
