I'd be quite surprised if the Lexington site were large enough for a station
on 680. Also I think there would be a hell of a zoning fight if ARS
attempted to put up additional towers there. ARS actually has quite a few
options. WEEI and WRKO could easily diplex from either the Needham or
Burlington sites, probably without the need for additional towers. It's the
towers that raise the hackles of the environmental groups. Although the
Needham site is a good one, the Burlington site is outstanding. WRKO covers
New Hampshire quite well from Burlington, and thanks to the largely salt
water path, also covers the Cape like a local. Although WEEI has a very good
signal now, it would have an even better one if it moved to Burlington. And
if ARS has ideas about putting up another tall tower to compete with Sconnix
for the FM business, the thing to do would be to move WEEI to Burlington to
clear the Needham site for the tall tower. Needham is the only location in
the Boston area where the FAA would be likely to approve another 1200-ft
tower. Certainly both Burlington and Lexington are out for that purpose
because of their proximity to Hanscom Field. But, as you point out, the
Burlington land is more valuable than that at the other two sites, so who
knows what will happen? When economics gets in the way, AM propagation
usually loses out.
