I guess my previous post on this didn't make distribution.  The way I heard
the story is that WHEB wanted to upgrade the FM signal with a higher tower,
but ran into zoning problems.  As part of a compromise, taking down the AM
tower was a condition for receiving the ok to construct the taller FM tower.

The AM was just a simulcast anyway, I doubt anyone except us radio geeks
even noticed it was gone.
