Early 1940s, on WBEN, later on WGR, and eventually back to WBEN (according
to his memoirs, which I have in front of me right now.). He moved back to
WBEN in the spring of 1943, to take over the 9 AM spot, where the ratings
were dominated by Don MacNeil's Breakfast Club on ABC. He says that CBS
and NBC didn't start feeding network affiliates until 10:00 because there
wasn't much point. And he managed to beat Breakfast Club in the local
ratings. The general manager at WBEN suggested that NBC look at his show
with the possibility of originating it from Buffalo for the network or
bringing it to New York. NBC concluded that "early Date" (That's what it
was called) got its popularity from its local flavor and appeal and
wouldn't work on the network. So instead they hired Bob Smith to do his
show locally in New York.
