As Garrett noted, some of the station histories in Boston are much more
convoluted than a first glance indicates. Barry Mishkind, who maintains the
Broadcast Radio FAQ, wrote about WLAW/WRKO/WVDA/WEZE:
" WNAC's owner purchased the facilities of WLAW, moving the call sign to 680
kHz. The 1260 kHz frequency was sold to the operators of WVDA, later WEZE.
Hence, WEZE traces itself through the frequency to 1922, rather than the
1953 beginning of WVDA."
On the Boston Radio Archives, we try our best to clarify some of this... for
example, I know that the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune was trying to divest itself
of WLAW, while WNAC had for many years (since about 1928, in fact) been
petitioning the FCC for a better frequency... it wasn't until 1953 that any
type of solution was reached...
