I recall that day very well and can still see it exploding  over and over 
again. I was at NBC in their satellite area and it was just a  routine 
launch. When it exploded everyone knew what was to follow. They  immediately cut 
to the ground and the families staring up into space  smiling. They stayed 
with them until it was announced that it had in fact  exploded.
 
TV stations back then did not have spare anything especially  tape machines 
so none of them recorded it. So we had on transponder dedicated to  the 
explosion video over and over again for over three hours until everyone had  
it. I went home with the thought of "explode, rewind, explode, rewind,  
explode......".
