I believe I read sometime back in the 1960s (or maybe late 1950s) 
that UHF was better for color because it was less prone to ghosts.  A 
picture with Ghosts is a lot easier to tolerate in B&W.  I do know 
that, when I've tried to watch TV without cable around here, I've 
generally found it much easier to get a watchable picture on the UHF 
stations.
