So I've ascertained.  I hope that a USB sound card with a line in 
jack will make it possible for me to use my laptop.  Then I can put 
the two devices side by side and, hopefully, make this thing work.  
It's too much of a pain in the ass to move the desk PC into the 
livingroom.

The headphones jack on the stereo is the jack that I've been using.
