There's no reason to assume that. In fact, the reverse is more
likely. Many times what were once unincorporated villages within a
town became separate towns.
In any event, my reference, "Historical Data Relating to Counties,
Cities, and Towns in Massachusetts," published by the State
Secretary's office in 1975, contains no mention of Auburndale or
Nonantum as having once been independent towns.

The Newton villages were never separate towns, nor was Readville.
