That's my recollection too.  As I recall, when Leno was losing 
ratings to Letterman, he re-tooled his studio and tried various other 
changes to try to catch up -- in which he succeeded.  A setup which 
placed him closer to the audience was one of the biggest changes.  He 
also tried more casual attire, but gave that up fairly quickly.
