New Bedford Channel 6 was originally WTEV. It's WLNE now ("ABC 6").
WSBK-TV was born WIHS-TV; it was owned by the Archdiocese of Boston before
Storer bought it. WUNI-TV (27 in Worcester) was originally WSMW. If you
want to go waaaaay back, WLVI (WKBG) was WTAO-TV in its first incarnation
(mid-'50s). It was dark for a few years before Kaiser and the Boston Globe
bought and resurrected it. WPRI-TV (Providence 12) was WPRO-TV, owned by
the Cherry & Webb department store chain along with the radio station.
-Doug (a fellow pedantic geek, who can remember when radio and TV stations
wore their call letters proudly)
