I don't know how we define "success"-- but when I was a kid (in the mid 
50s), WCOP was doing top-40 and fairly popular.  I'm not sure if they ever 
were a dominant force in Boston, no matter what format they had, but some 
well respected announcers like Nelson Bragg and Jack Chase worked there in 
the 50s.
