As in many places, there were a number of papers that were consolidated over the years.  I 
believe there was once a Springfield Republican, separate from the Union and the News.  I 
heard from somewhere that it goes back to when "Republican" meant Jeffersonian.   When I 
was at UMass/Amherst in the 1960s, there was a morning Springfield Union, an evening 
Springfield News, and a Sunday Republican, all from the same company.  I'm not sure when 
the daily paper became the Union-News.  I'm under the impression that the change to the 
daily Republican took place sometime about a year ago.
