As in many places, there were a number of papers that were consolidated over the years. I
believe there was once a Springfield Republican, separate from the Union and the News. I
heard from somewhere that it goes back to when "Republican" meant Jeffersonian. When I
was at UMass/Amherst in the 1960s, there was a morning Springfield Union, an evening
Springfield News, and a Sunday Republican, all from the same company. I'm not sure when
the daily paper became the Union-News. I'm under the impression that the change to the
daily Republican took place sometime about a year ago.
