Does Bob Ellis Think He's Still On WLLH?
I get up before 6:00 am and generally catch the "local"
news at 6:00 on WCCM-AM 1490, COL Haverhill, studio Methuen,
intended audience Lawrence-Methuen-*Andover-Haverhill.
The newscaster at that hour is
Bob Ellis
(he pauses a lot)
who used to do news at WLLH-AM 1400, which, when it was
Anglo-owned, primarily covered doings in the Swindle, I mean
Spindle City. Now that he does his thing at WCCM, he can't
let Lowell go. Now once in a while, something happens in
Lowell that is worth bringing up outside of the "Greater"
Lowell DMA, but for the most part, Ellis brings up items
of no interest to other denizens of the Valley. He went
overboard today (09/08) with a story about a bridge in
Lowell that won't allow buses or trucks, and some measure
passed by the Lowell City Council re the local bus station.
There was even something pertaining to Dracut, the gravamen
of which escapes me now.
WCCM is lucky to be heard in Lowell at noon time; there's
NO signal at all before dawn or critical hours. And Lowell
still has an Anglo (ok Hebraic) owner and is in English
much of
the day with local news. (Exceptions are late-nights,
weekends, and when Gary says "irregardless".)
The question is, will Bob cut back on all this Lowell stuff
when the Lowell Sun/WJUL show hits, or is he unable to
cut the umbilical cord to his home town?
Laurence Glavin
*WSNH-AM 900 COL Nashua, NH mentions Andover in its station ID. Fat chance.
