That's the whole point.  They want to make SURE you know what channel 
you're tuned into.

I don't get it.  If I want to see what station my TV set is tuned into I 
just walk up to the set and look at the tuning dial on the TV.

It's pointing to 5 -- oh OK.  I'm watching Channel 5.  Whoopeee!!
