If the new owners feel they'll make MORE money and
avoid any risk of running local programming from a
remote site by using bird feed instead, then bird feed
it shall be. Local owners might be willing to make
LESS money to provide a community service (especially
for their home community) and possibly add value for
the station in other ways such as improving reputation
or name recognition. Reputation and name recognition
are long-term benefits that can't be measured in
dollars and cents directly. This is why non-local
oligopolies are bad for local content in radio. The
oligopolies are all about optimizing profit and
minimizing risk. Doing a local format may be viable,
but from the oligopolies' perspective, it's all about
maximizing numbers (and be damned any value that might
be added that is not directly and immediately
measurable in dollars and cents of profit for shareholders).
