As to the validity of WIDE carrying high school sports...it isn't cheap. I
did play-by-play of several sports over the years. The costs associated with
the venture add up quickly.
Now...I am an employee of the Portland Radio Group, so take my opinion for
what it is worth.
Cary has a love of news and sports. If there is any way he could continue
to provide local sports coverage for Biddeford-Saco I am sure he would. He
also has to turn a profit...because that's why commercial radio exists. And
he has contractual obligations that must be met.
The pending purchase of WIDE is a business decision. Saga has enough faith
in the capabilities of the Portland Radio Group to believe that we will make
a go of it. I know I'll give it my best effort...whatever my involvement
turns out to be, if any.
Sadly, the days of strictly local radio are over. No more six or seven news
operations within a market. No more individual owners...they are
disappearing. However, we can still be diverse. The six stations at 420
Western Ave share resources, but we remain separate stations. We are
competitive within the building and the market.
Bottom line. I hope the folks in Biddeford-Saco will be able to hear their
high school sports...I know Cary would love to see it happen....if its
financially, technically, and contractually feasible.
