Hamper?  It was more like enhance.  I heard it too, this morning some 
bible-thumper station was over-powering WERS.  It sounds like what we had 
today was sporadic-e enhancement, which is still not fully understood, but 
believed related to wind shears.  When you hear stations from several 
hundred miles away and no more, that's tropospheric ducting, which occurs 
in lower levels of the atmosphere than sporadic-e.
