This sort of activity is quite common.  I worked for a company (in East
Boston )
as a Software Engineer.  They had no formal archiving system for source
code.
The engineers just kept floppies in their desk drawer.  When an engineer
quit,
the manager would just clean out the engineer's desk and throw it all
away.
Engineering notes, diagrams, memoes, etc - all gone.  Frequently, the
question
"where is the source code for the XYZZY project?" would have no answer.

Like many engineering Pack Rats, I scoured the desk of the recently
departed
to salvage what I could before Mr. Clean did his "dirty work".  Saved my
butt
more than once.
