Boston Globe Online / City & Region / TV battle for July 4th had its own fireworks

Classic case of sour grapes from WCVB over losing the 4th of July Pops
concert to WBZ and CBS.

Paul LaCamera and Liz Cheng have been at the helm as WCVB since Hearst
took over from Metromedia and have allowed a once great station to
bottom out. Granted the problem lies with Hearst which has tried to run
WCVB as though it was in a market like Milwaukee instead of Boston. True
Chronicle remains a mainstay but it makes big bucks for the station. 10
years ago Hearst ordered WCVB to cancel a huge money maker for the
station, Candlepin Bowling because they didn't want to pay the union
remote fees. They didn't care that the show was a Ch 5 tradition ( and
it scored big ratings til the end )
When WCVB took over in 1972, they made sure 3 icons of WHDH moved over,
the news team, Perry Mason at 5 and bowling.

However I fear 4 and CBS will screw this up as 4 going to network at 10
will hurt the overall program. 5 and AandE were always a simulcast.
