Re: WBUR & Fresh Air

And the 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Sunday rebroadcast of the first hour of WESUN now
seems to have been permanently pre-empted by a BBC call-in show. Good LORD is
the BBC dull! I think the Brits must have conceived it as the antidote to
radio! Only a very few people in England can be stuffy enough to enjoy that
arcane nonsense. Do you suppose they think of the BBC as aural medicine? NPR
shows like TOTN (or WNYC's New York and Co with Richard Lopait) prove that
public radio call-in shows don't have to be dull. If you listen to many of
those BBC shows, you get the impression that thoughtful radio has to bore you
to tears. Well, at least we were spared Judy Swallow as host of The Connection.
Although I gather that Swallow is a relatively young woman (30ish), she sounds
as if she's playing the matronly, buxsome schoolmarm from the '30s, ruler in
hand, scowl permanently emblazoned on her face, ready to deal out a swift rap
across the knuckles to anybody in the audience who doesn't pay strict attention.
