Did you ever think that pop music is mainly about money to begin with?
Songs are written to sell and to be commercial. Art is secondary. If that
was not the case, why are most pop songs 3 to 5 minutes long?
It's not like Meatloaf is doing all that well these days. He might need the
money! ;-)
Then there are the cases when songs beome hits because they were in
commercials. There was one case of an artist who died in the 1970's with
little success, whose song was recently featured in an ad and all of a
sudden his albu,s started to sell. I forget the name.
