It was the early 80's and the eruption of Mt. St. Helen was a major 
focus for the news media.

It was an April fools prank.  IIRC, Tom Ellis was anchoring the 6 p.m. 
news and was preparing to go into
a break when he turned the page on his copy and attempted to read a "story"
about GBH turning into an active volcano.

He was clearly caught unaware, and read the story with halting disbelief 
and
they went to a commercial.

Channel 7 fired the "person responsible", an Asst. News Director- I 
think,  for getting the story on the air.
