Fire destroys site of local TV talent show sponsor

A fire Tuesday destroyed the site of the former Frankenstein's, a store that
secured a place in Maine television history by sponsoring the local talent
show that became ''Stacey's Country Jamboree.''

Frankenstein's was the original sponsor of ''Country Jamboree,'' which got
its start in the mid 1960s when store owner Bob Whitten bought two hours of
air time on Channel 7 in Bangor for the show and invited his friend, Charlie
Tenan, to serve as emcee.

Broadcast live on Saturday nights, the program allowed anyone who could
sing, play a guitar or yodel to show up unannounced at the Bangor studio and
appear on the air.
