Cost of boycott

I'm curious about the real dollars that can be impacted to a composer when
a song experiences a dramatic drop in performance/spins?  Follow-up, how
closely do the licensing cos. track airplay?  How often do stations report
whet they play?  I imagine with software in use, it's a breeze to report.
