RE: Fire on Mt. Washington

A quick look at the FCC webpage shows that both WHOM & WPKQ have 5kw
backups but they are both located on Mt. Washington, presumably in the
same damaged building. An AP story (via boston.com) reports that a
Sno-Cat is headed up the mountain this afternoon but would not be able
to bring the 4 staffers in the observatory down until Monday. They are
currently without electricity & heat with a temperature near zero and 75
mph winds.

WCSH is reporting that a fire on Mt. Washington this afternoon damaged
generators and knocked WHOM and WPKQ off the air today at about 4:00 PM.

Depending upon the amount of damage, it could be tough to make repairs
at
this time of year. Does anyone know if either station has a back-up
facility off the mountain?

I'm sure the folks at WMTW are happy they are off the mountain.
