You don't have to go back that far. WKXL AM/FM in Concord, N.H. did that
at 11:20 (give or take) as recently as 2 years ago. They'd end up the
broadcast day with a local newscast and a cheesy signoff, complete with
National Anthem. I'm honestly not sure that anyone knew that all they
needed was a legal ID! 'KXL didn't go 24/7 until April 2001 when we
installed an automation system. A real time warp, that place was!

One of the oddest sign-offs was that of WEEI-AM 103.3 at 11:30 pm just
before American Airline's "Music Through the Night" on then WEEI-AM 590.
The programming, light-classical till midnight or so, and then industrial strength classical (full-length symphonies and the like,
some of which today's WCRB wouldn't touch) was ideal for FM, but CBS
would'nt simulcast it. Mel was in diapers probably, but maybe even then they
wanted to charge extra for FM and AA wouldn't pay it. It always puzzled
me.
