My Morning at Waldenbooks
I had an interesting experience at the Waldenbooks at the
Rockingham Mall in Salem, NH this morning. As I was making
a purchase, I asked if the store gave any discount for WGBH members (Lauriat's used to). The seasonal apparently
temporary clerk didn't know, but another more senior clerk
(had been there three weeks?) said "give him an institutional discount on the computer". Some of you who
believe I should be institutionalized will like that.
Anyway, the seasonal clerk to whom I just referred suddenly asked me
"I notice people asking for WGBH discounts, but nobody
can tell me what 'WGBH' stands for...do you know"?
(Honest, I'm not making this up)
Well, you can imagine how tempting it was do do a ten-minute
oration on this subject, but there were many people in
line, so I kept it short...I quickly said that the orginal
WGBH was a radio station that put its tower on the Great
Blue Hill in Milton (some say it's Canton) and chose the initials
as their call letters and that 'W' is used by nearly all radio
and TV stations in the east; the TV station came later
and was up there too, but since moved, and the radio station will too.
I stopped short of giving her the URL of this website however.
I think it's a remarkable coincidence that she blurted out this
question unprovoked to just the person who could give her
the "final answer"!
