Re: WCAT-AM Now Spanish (Ethnic?)
WCAT could now get a few watts at night. The FCC has revised the formulas for
calculating the location of Class A AMs' 0.5 mV/m 50% skywave contours. This
change has reduced most Class As' protected service by hundreds of miles. As a
result, there is now a full-time station on 1030 in a Chicago suburb (WNVR
Vernon Hills IL). WBZ used to have a killer nighttime signal there. WRYM 840
New Britain CT, which is co-channel with WHAS Louisvile, now runs 125W-N DA-N
(two towers protecting WHAS). Louisville is closer to New Britain than
Cincinnati is to Orange. Without a DA to protect WLW, WCAT might get only 4 or
5W at night, but that might be enough to deliver a listenable signal to most of
the COL.
