That is not a post defending Hutch. No one attacked
him. That is a
post calling Greater Media cheap for not hiring
weekend jocks from
Emerson. I'm trying to point out a couple of flaws in
your post:
1) That "cheap" is a non-issue when it comes to hiring
weekend talent.
It comes across as cheap to the outsider.
2) Hutch working on two stations is good for him and
for both stations.
'Nough said on that..glad that Hutch and Greater Media
are content with the mutual arrangement.
With all these radio companies pushing fewer employees
harder for less pay. i.e. On the air for 3 or 4 hours
then voice-track another 3 or 4! Makes for Cheap and
boring radio.
3) College students with no experience are not ready
for daytime shifts
on major market stations. There are a zillion
subtlities of
performance that they have yet to learn: losing a
regionalism, learning how to
finesse a mike, how not to pop their P's, how to
pronounce W, how to
sound knowledgable and excited about music they didn't
choose to play and
might not even like, how to follow a strict format,
why
quarter-hour-maintenance liners are important, why
ratings make or break you, how to
talk to a demo they're not in yet (especially a demo
that is, say 20
years older and of the opposite sex). That's the stuff
that you learn
through experience - working at paid jobs out there in
the real world.

All Points I highly agree with you on, though most of
that *should* have been taught to them while they were
in school there! Except - they need a program director
who believes in them and is willing to get them to
that status. Granted, Greater Media is not a school -
but it is certainly a valuable source for students
wanting to advance to the next level and do what it
takes to achieve those goals.
